大多数学校都要求申请人提供二至三封推荐信。有力的推荐是录取的重要条件之

一。推荐信要客观、公正、切忌流于形式，内容空洞，要与申请人的其它材料（如成绩单）等相符。

范例1 计算机教授推荐信

At the request of Mr. Xizhen Chen, my former student in the Department of Computer Science, Beijing Univ. of Sciences, I am glad to write this letter furnishing my evaluation of his academic aptitude for your reference. Mr. Chen is interested in your graduate program in Computer Science.

I came to know him in September 1987 when Mr. Chen enrolled in my class on FORTRAN IV Programming, a three semesters' course. In the class he was one of the most outstanding students. At the semester final he earned a high grade of 81, which should be "A" according to our grading system. I also found him good at other studies.

After the class, he had personal talks with me several times. He indicated a great interest in computer hardware, In my opinion, Mr. Chen has a potential in Computer Science, which can be further developed. In view of his previous achievements in this College, I am firmly convinced that Mr. Chen will make a successful graduate student. Your favorable consideration of his admission will be highly appreciated.

1. 为了便于校方查阅，必须提到被推荐者的全名。

2. 必须交待与被推荐者的认识期间（何时开始认识或认识多久），认识程度（偶尔见面或密切接触）及关系（师生关系，上下级关系，同事等）。

3. 对被推荐者的优点介绍及评价，这是推荐信的核心。主要包括被推荐者的天赋，学习成绩，研究能力，工作经验，学习精神，组织能力，品行及个性方面。

4. 必须表明推荐人的态度，是极力推荐还是有保留地推荐。

最近一些学校出于各种原因，设计了推荐表格，由推荐人填写，但其主要内容也和推荐信涉及的相同。

范例2 商管系教授推荐信

It gives me a great pleasure to recommend Mr. Cheng as a transfer to the School of Business Administration of your University in the summer

quarter of 1989.

During academic year 1980-1984, he was a student in our Department, World College of Journalism. I found him very diligent and intelligent. He often participated in extracurricular activities contributing a great deal to community affairs.

Though Mr. Cheng graduated from this college 5 years ago, he keeps, contact with me very often. Worthy of mention also is his personality, honest, reliable, responsible and mature.

I strongly recommend this promising young man and your favorable consideration and assistance to him will be very much appreciated.

范例3 法律系教授推荐信

I am pleased to write this letter for my former student Miss Nan Li, who graduated from this College with an L.B. degree in June 1978.

Miss Li was admitted to the Department of Law of this College in 1974 through highly competitive entrance examination which is conducted annually and is open to the whole nation. Even in such a selective group. Miss Li made herself distinguished. As professor and dean of the College, I have access to her records of academic work and moral conduct, In her fourth year study, I instructed her in Anglo-American Laws on Trespass. So I have known her quite well.

Miss Li's performance, like that in many other courses she taken, was excellent with a superior grade of 86 for the first semester, and 84 for the second semester. In our university and in other university here, 80 is considered "A" , the highest level.

As far as I know, Miss Li wishes to continue her study in Law for an advanced degree. I am sure she has had sufficient prerequisite knowledge for the subject and certainly has the ability to undertake the study. 推荐信的份量直接关系到能否出国留学，能否获得奖学金等，作为对外联系的材料，是其中一份较为重要的文件。推荐信的目的是通过国内专家向对方介绍申请人的工作、学习和专业方向等情况。在出国申请是否成功的诸多要素中，有力的推荐信是录取的重要条件之一，其份量仅次于于本科成绩单和标准化考试（GRE、GMAT、TOEFL）成绩。

多数学校都要求申请人提交两封到三封的推荐信，由教授、系主任或工作主管直接寄给指定的单位。

一、选择推荐人

推荐信是了解申请人的重要依据，在研究生课程中尤其如此。申请人可以选择现在或以前的老师、教授或雇主。推荐人必须熟悉学生的学习情况，了解学生的学习目的是否明确，在学术上是否有前途，以及学生的适应能力、创造能力、品行和特长。

书写推荐信的最理想的人选是一封由系主任写，一封由专业课教授写，一封由自己的导师写。不过，对方若无规定，则除了自己的亲属之外，任何人皆可为推荐人。推荐人一般应具备高级技术职称，如教授、副教授、研究员、副研究员等。如果推荐人在国内外学术界享有盛誉，或者被申请就读学校聘为客座教授，或者曾经在该校讲过学，那么这样的推荐人写的推荐信就具有很强的效力了。

二、推荐信的内容

推荐信一般应包括下列内容：

被推荐人的基本情况介绍。侧重于个人的毕业时间、学校、所获学位以及个人的专业经历。

推荐人对被推荐人的基本评价。侧重于被推荐人的专业基础、个性、特点、工作态度和在学术上的前途估计。若是推荐研究生，推荐人还需进一步说明其深造学习的基础和当前所具备的研究能力。显然，恰如其分地评价被推荐人的基础、能力和前途，比言过其实的赞誉更令人情服，更具有实际意义。

推荐人可以着重介绍被推荐人曾经获得的奖励，发表过的论文，参加过的重要学术会议，以及曾在学生组织或学术团体中的任职等来支持自己的评价。

推荐人还必须清楚地表明被推荐人留学的身份是研究生还是访问学者，专业领域和研究方向是什么。 如果大学提供了现成的推荐表格，则必须按这类表格认真逐项填写。推荐表格中一般有学生综合评估的一项，即要求推荐人说明该生在所教的学生中应列为前5％，10％，或25％等。这种评估是指教授的个人评价，可以稍高一点。另外，推荐表格上常有许多难以填写的项目，遇到这种情形可填"I don't know"，亦不致对该生的评价有何严重影响。

推荐信尾必须有推荐人的亲笔签名，最好直接由推荐人寄给学校招生办官员或申请就读学校的系主任。如果由被推荐人寄送，可将推荐信装入信封内封好后由推荐人在信封口处亲笔签名以示保密。信封正面注明"A Letter Of Recommendation"，表明这是一封推荐信。

推荐信样例 一（管理）

Dear Sir/Madam:

In the capacity of the former dean of "Dalian Management School" of Dalian University of Technology(DUT), I am writing with pleasure to recommend Mr. Cai to your esteemed university.

I got to know him personally when he was taking the course--Methodology of Management Research (or Methods of Management as stated in his transcripts), a course I taught, concerning basic research methods, especially quantitative approach to management research. Then he took one of my other courses--Advanced Strategic Management. Mr. Caleb showed great aptitude on both courses and he got 78 on both, which seem a bit lower, but if you take the difficulty of the test papers and my strict grading into account, you will understand why such scores are still among the top five. （六）如果可能的话，推荐者最好与你修的科目或学校相关。譬如说：如果你将来计划主修英文，最好推荐人之一是英文老师。又如，如果你申请常春藤名校（IVY LEAGUE SCHOOL），推荐者若也是常春藤名校出身，则其推荐信将更有力。

（七）适当提及自己的“缺点”。一封推荐信如果阐述的完全是被推荐的同学的优点，不免让人觉得有粉饰之嫌，如果能恰当地加入一些“缺点”，不仅能令推荐信真实，还会通过“似贬实褒”，反而突出

了被推荐人的特殊气质。例如计算机专业、数学专业乃至金融专业的同学，在推荐信中可以考虑加入这样的词句：“该生有时因为过分专注于研究工作而难以平衡生活各方面的关系，这不失为一种美中不足”。这句话似乎是在谈“缺点”，但很明显这样的“缺点”其实正是很多专业最渴望的“缺点”——废寝忘食的工作态度，从而使得“缺点”也为申请提供了巨大帮助。

（一）与申请者的关系：表达清楚何种方式认识。譬如说是老师、指导教授，老板等。说明交往多久，如果是教授学生关系，对教授的科目做一个简短的说明，如果推荐信者是你的老板（主管），请详细说明你的工作职责。

（二）推荐者对申请人人格个性特征的印象：譬如学习精神、工作态度、与同事（同学）相处的情形、组织领导能力、学术专长、研究能力、有无工作经验与否，并加注评语。

（三）推荐者对你能否顺利完成学位的看法：譬如说，描述你对特别分配职务上的表现，以表现你的应变能力。又如，申请者是否有其它潜力未发挥？ 如果申请者的成绩未尽理想，评述你对申请者的看法。解释申请者虽然形式上的成绩未尽理想，却有极深厚的潜力尚未发挥。如果申请者转系，也可以强调申请者有强烈的学习动机，根据推荐者的观察，相信以申请者的表现，一定可以成功完成学业。

（四）推荐者对申请人人格个性特征的印象：譬如学习精神、工作态度、与同事（同学）相处的情形、组织领导能力、学术专长、研究能力、有无工作经验与否，并加注评语。

（五）重述推荐者对申请人的支持及能力的确认，以再次肯定对申请人的支持与推荐。

留学推荐信的结构

推荐信的结构形式是比较统一的，尤其是开头和结尾两段大概表现的意思基本上是一样的。①第一段首先应该介绍一下推荐人与申请人的关系，在什么情况下认识，相识多久;并且应该明确在第一段中表现出推荐人非常愿意推荐申请人到这个学校就读。②一般第二段就是推荐人对申请人的评估情况，也可以表现一下推荐人为何对申请人印象深刻，然后举例证实一下推荐人对于申请人的评估结构。如果所表达的东西比较多，这一部分也可以分为两段来写。③第三段内容主要是对申请人特质的一些概括，或者是推荐人认为申请人在这个专业以后的发展潜力做一下描述，还可写一些对学校评审委员的感谢之类的话。

留学推荐信的模式

推荐信的格式有些模式可循，以下将针对各段提供模式作参考：

（一）抬头可用的格式有： Dear Sir/Madam; To Whom It May Concern:

（二）第一段：引文句子可以引用如： “It is a pleasure to recommend to you (name)， a former student of mine at (name of university).” “I an very happy to have this opportunity to recommend (name)， who is presently applying for admission to your graduate (or undergraduate) program in (name of program).” “I understand that (name) is applying for admissions to your graduate (undergraduate) school， and has requested that I write this letter of recommendation for her/him.” “In my capacity as professor at xxxx University， I have known xxx for three years， as both his/her advisor and professor.”

（三）第二段：这段可以提供最实质的内容。譬如，如果推荐者是教授， 解释学生在他门下所修的课程。 “(name) took two of my courses during the 1984-85 academic year， as

follows; “xxxxx” and “xxxxx”.” “(Name) was enrolled in three of classes from September 1984 to June 1986 “xxx” and “xxx”.”

接下来，教授写一些有关申请人在课堂上的表现，如完成的研究计划、实验室研究、研究报告、考试的成绩、课堂态度、讨论课的参与等，举出实例。“ In my class (es)， (name) did excellent work. She always listened attentively， participated activitely in class， and handed in very good written assignment. “In particular， his/her research paper on (topic) was of exceptionally high quality， and showed that s/he fully understands and has a strong background in his/her field.”

如果推荐人是工作主管，首先一定要仔细陈述申请人的工作职责，并对申请者工作表现作一评估。如果可能的话尽量列举实例。“ When (name) held the position of (job title) in this company she was one s/he was one of my best employees. His/her job responsibilities included (describe them)， and s/he carried out his/her duties with exceptional skill and professionalism.” “S/he not only did his/her own work， but also helped other employees， and made many valuable contributions to the efficient running to our firm.”

第二段最后一段：可以提及申请人在班上（或公司里）的比较表现（譬如排名）： “I was rate (name)'s academic ability as in the top 10% of his/her class.” “Compared against other students that I have taught， I would say that (name) ranks in the upper 10%.

接下来，推荐者可对申请人能否成功完成学业提出看法。举例： “Based on his/her previous

performance， I am certain that (name) would be a very successful student at your university.”“ I believe that (name) possesses all the qualities necessary to make an excellent graduate student in his/her chosen field， and am sure that s/he will make a fine addition to your campus.”

（四）第三段：如果还有其它话想说，请另写一段.例如：英文能力、沟通技巧、领导才能、特殊学术或工作背景。譬如说，如果申请人欲申请的科系是企管系，推荐者可着力描写他们有关申请人商业的专

门技术、领导才能，以及申请者所参加的商业活动，例如，有关商业方面的组织社团。又如，申请人申请护理研究所，推荐者可着力描写他们关怀的态度、处理实验室的技能，或是对病人的奉献。

（五）最后，以几句结尾作总结； “Therefore， I am happy to highly and without reservation recommend (name) for admission to your graduate program. Your kind/serious consideration of his/her application would be most appreciated.” “I am thus pleased to give my full support and recommendation to (name)'s application for admission to your school. If any further information is required， please feel free to contact me.” 签名： Sincerely， Sincerely yours， Very truly yours， With best regards，

Dear Sir/Madam: I am writing this letter of recommendation for Mr.Caleb，my former student. I have known Mr. Caleb for more than 6 years since his freshman year at "University of Minnesota". At that time， he took the course-- "Mathematical Analysis，" which I taught mainly for junior students majoring in Mathematics. To my surprise， I found he was among the few students in his class who could keep up with the pace of my lectures. Moreover， he often posed thought-provoking questions during the course. Thus it was natural that I liked discussing with this young man and became familiar with him. The more I knew him， the more I found he was talented at mathematics.
